What a great piece! I love the red fingernails!
Love the red nails!!! Heart and Hand usually means love and friendship, sounds like a subconcious statement of the BJP, love of beads and new firendships.
I had to chuckle as I was reading your post. I was already leaning left. I couldn't help but imagine all the people doing this project looking at it at the same time and everyone leaning left.

I love the heart (is that a mirror in the middle) and the variegated edge around the hand. Oh, and those red nails, ooh la la!
I'm not an art therapist, but here are some of my associations with hands - creativity, helping hands, healing hands, loving hands, hand to heart, (patriotism), working hands, honest hands, life line and fate line on the palms, clapping, praying, shaking hands, waving, I bet you can think of more...

I think Vicki is leading you in a good direction. Have to add my impression that the hand may represent your own hand, your hand as a child... Little Heidi... Maybe the painted fingernails represent things she wanted and didn't get as a child, things you can give her now. What do you think?

This is beautiful work. When I was doing some recovery work I wrote with my left hand and them with my dominate right hand . The left was less hindered and more open to the creative child within.
